FISH CURRY (Naadan meen curry)







This is a traditional Kerala style meen/fish curry using coconut and tamarind/valan puli. 
Any kind of fish can be used for this preparation. In this post I used Catfish. Traditionally,Mackerel /mathi is used.


INGREDIENTS


Fish ------------------------------- 1lb
Small onion or Red onion--- 2 tbsp, sliced and crushed
Ginger-----------------------------1 inch
Garlic----------------------------- 3 large cloves
Grated coconut-----------------1/2 cup
Cumin seeds---------------------1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder--------------1/2 tsp
Red chilly powder-------------2 tsp
Coriander powder------------ 2 tbsp
Tamarind/valan puli--------- 1 lemon size (soak in warm water)
Oil-------------------------------- 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds-----------------1/2 tsp
Dried red chilly----------------2
Fenu greek seeds-------------1/4 tsp
Curry leaves-------------------2 spring
Salt-------------------------------as needed


METHOD

  1. Medium heat oil in a vessel and splutter mustard seeds,dried red chilly, fenu greek seeds and curry leaves.
  2. Slice and crush small onions,ginger and garlic in mortar and pestle.
  3. Next add this crushed small onions,ginger and garlic to the above vessel and saute till the raw smell goes.
  4. Then add turmeric powder, red chilly powder and coriander powder. Saute in low flame till the raw smell of masala goes.
  5. Then add tamarind water.
  6. Add fish to it and cook. Add needed salt.
  7. Mean while grind coconut and cumin seeds to a very smooth paste.
  8. Add this ground coconut paste to the above vessel.
  9. Bring it to boil till the gravy is slightly thick. Check the seasoning.
  10. Transfer this to a serving bowl and garnish with curry leaves.
