BANANA FLOWER CUTLET (Vaazzha poo/vazha koompu cutlet)

Banana flower is very nutritious and healthy. The edible part is the inner soft portion.


Banana flower------------------ 1 small
Potato----------------------------- 2 medium sized
Green chilly---------------------- 3, chopped finely
Onion------------------------------ 1/4 cup,chopped finely
Ginger garlic paste------------ 1 1/2 tbsp
Garam masala powder--------1/4 tsp
Coriander powder--------------1/4 tsp
Red chilly powder---------------1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder----------------1/2 tsp
Salt---------------------------------- as needed
Bread crumbs-------------------- 2 cups ( toast 4 slices of bread and powder it)
Egg---------------------------------- 1
Oil----------------------------------- as needed


  1. Boil the potatoes with little salt in it.
  2. Then discard the skin of potato and mash it. Keep it aside.
  3. In a bowl, slightly beat an egg and keep it aside.
  4. Discard the outer six layers of banana flower and chop finely the edible,soft inner part.
  5. Wash the chopped banana flower thoroughly and add 2 tbsp of oil and a pinch of turmeric powder to it. Mix it good.Adding oil will remove all the stickiness and turmeric powder will prevent the discoloration.
  6. Now in a medium heat pan, add a tbsp of oil and saute onions and green chilly.
  7. Next add the ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell goes.
  8. Then add the banana flower.
  9. Add needed salt and cook it in low flame.
  10. Next add turmeric powder, red chilly powder,coriander powder and garam masala powder.
  11. Saute till the raw smell of masala goes.
  12. Next add the mashed potatoes.
  13. Check the seasoning and mix it good.
  14. Transfer this to a plate and add 3 tbsp of bread crumbs to it and mix it good. Adding bread crumbs to the potato mixture will help removing any moisture present in it.
  15. Make small patties with desired shape(round,oval or heart shape) using the potato mixture.
  16. Dip the patties in egg and then in bread crumbs.
  17. Then either deep fry it or shallow fry it in a pan with needed oil.
  18. Once it is slightly golden brown through out,transfer it to a plate.'
  19. Serve with tomato ketchup.
