BANANA FLOWER AND TARO/COLOCASIA STEM PORIYAL(Vaazhapoo chembu thandu poriyal)





INGREDIENTS


Banana flower------------------------1 small
Taro/Colocasia/chembu stem------1 small
Grated coconut----------------------1 cup
Green chilly---------------------------3
Small onions or Red onions--------1/2 cup,chopped
Coconut oil---------------------------1tsp + 1tbsp (1tsp for tempering,1tbsp for the banana flower to prevent stickiness)
Turmeric powder-------------------1 tsp
Mustard seeds-----------------------1/2 tsp
Dried red chilly----------------------1
Curry leaves-------------------------1 sprig
Salt as needed


METHOD

  1. Remove the outer 5 layers of banana flower and cut finely the soft inner part.
  2. Wash it thoroughly and add a tbsp of oil and turmeric powder to it.Mix it good. Adding oil will prevent stickiness and turmeric powder will prevent discoloration. 
  3. Keep it aside.
  4. Now peel off the outer green layer of taro/colocasia stem and chop finely the inner soft and tender part.
  5. Wash it good and keep it aside.
  6. Next using a mortar and pestle or with hand mix together grated coconut,green chilly and onions.Slightly crush and mix thoroughly till a nice flavor of coconut,green chilly and onion comes out.Do not grind it in a blender.
  7. Keep it aside.
  8. Now in a medium heat pan add a tsp of oil and splutter mustard seeds,dried red chilly and curry leaves.
  9. Then add crushed coconut mixture and finely chopped banana flower and taro stem.
  10. Add needed salt and mix it good.
  11. Cover and cook in low flame. Do not add water for cooking.
  12. Once it is fully cooked,transfer it to a serving bowl and enjoy this highly nutritious dish with rice and curry.
